Youth Experience

The Rainbow Company Youth Theatre

What does it look like, sound like, feel like when you work with young people towards a shared vision?

The Reluctant Dragon

How might I tell this classic story in a way that develops the community and inspires a greater appreaction for the arts for all who encouter it?

In the fall of 2017, I directed The Reluctant Dragon for the Rainbow Company Youth Theatre. The role of the director is to bring the words on the page to life for audiences.

The Vision

In researching the classic story, The Reluctant Dragon, I came across a version with illustrations by Inga Moore. You may know her illustrations from other classics like, The Wind in the Willows. The bright and vivid imagery, captured my heart, and I wanted to bring the pages of this book for young people to life. How can I work with the young people of the Rainbow Company Youth Theatre to honor their strengths to develop their voice, agency, and influence on the theatrical process and the world beyond?

The Team

How might I work work with young people to honor their strengths and gifts?

STAGE MANAGER

The first person I brought on to the team was the Stage Manager, Sydny. They were a high school senior and became my right hand through the process. Working along side them was the mentorship they needed to run all aspects of the show once we opened. Developing their voice as a leader and allowing them to develop their unique ability to run rehearsals, work with the technical crews, and communicate with the box office and usher staff was thrilling.

*Sydny went on to obtain a degree in arts mangement and is currently working as a stage manager in Pennsylvania.

DESIGN TEAM

In the story the Dragon loves poetry, tea, and painting and my vision was that the artwork of the dragon would come to life on stage with an influence from the Inga Moore illustrations. One of our students was a senior in high school majoring in visual art and I immediately connected with her to see if she would design the set and bring these images to life. Not only was she able to deliver the most gorgeous product, she was also able to work with other young people and train them in painting techniques.

*That student went on to become an artist in New York City after graduating from SVA (School of Visual Art).

This vision carried into the costume, light, and prop design. All in service of the painted fields, and the magic of a boy who meets a dragon.

The Cast

How might I choose the right group of people to work together, use their brilliance respectfully, and create an amazing product through process?

Over 75 people ages 8 - 108 auditioned for one of the 16 roles in the performance. Through a 6 week rehearsal process, adults and young people from the community came together to bring the story of The Reluctant Dragon to life! The scene work, connection to their own human stories, and the development of characters with desires and objectives helped refine the performances of this group. Rehearsals ran Wednesday through Friday in the evenings and on Saturday mornings. The rehearsal process built on the foundational skills of theatre performance, working in an ensemble, and making couragous choices that would dazzle audiences.

Marketing

How might we market the show and engage others in the process?

I wanted an innovative way to bring new audience members to the performance. A show filled with dancing, sword fighting, and the magic of a dragon -- live on stage, how could they not love it! Working with local elementary schools, I teamed up with our set designer to create a coloring contest where the winning artist would receive free tickets for their whole family.. The ticket prices were also very economically priced, so even if participants didn't win the color contest it acted as an advertisement for the performance. We had a huge response and chose 9 winners!
